CHILDREN’S BOOK COVERS
The global children’s book market, particularly in the Asian Pacific and North American regions, is huge and growing yearly. Children and teens are dedicated readers and many of the books we read while young stay with us our whole lives.
Artwork forms an important aspect of children’s books, particularly the book cover. Children’s book covers must appeal to young readers, but just as importantly, the adult (usually a parent or a teacher) buying or recommending the book.
Modern children’s book covers employ vivid imagery and color to convey excitement, happiness, adventure and fun. Book-selling websites and bookshops reveal colorful children’s book covers employing detailed and artful illustrations which depict smiling kids of all races and ethnicities. Pictorialized baby animals also feature prominently on book covers marketed for young children.
Children’s books often impart life lessons such as living your dreams, dealing with “scary” first days of school (and the like) and making wise life choices. Educational topics on farm or wild animals, dinosaurs, famous people, science and history are consistent themes in children’s books as are fantasy, fairy tales and science fiction.
Children’s books are broken down into these categories:
Board Books – Ages 0-3: Board books are for very young children (baby’s first book) and are almost purely illustrative depicting colors or shapes or very simple tales.
Picture Books – Ages 3-5: As the name implies, picture books rely upon illustrations to move narrative themes of friendship, forgiveness, mercy and other important life knowledge. Picture-driven books aimed at 5 to 7-year-old children are called Early Readers.
Young Readers, Middle Grade or Chapter Books – Ages 7-12: As books become more complex and start to resemble stories or topics for older readers, they are broken into chapters and deal with issues that are more thought-provoking or challenging such as loneliness, alienation or loss. Young Readers contain illustrations but rely on text to tell the story.
Young Adult (YA) – Ages 12-14 and older: Young adult books come in all genres and themes aimed at a teenage market and center on young people. YA includes fiction and nonfiction, fantasy, historical, romance, etc., is often dark and moody and usually includes crises that must be overcome and an important life lesson learned.
