POETRY BOOK COVERS

In turbulent times, people seek understanding, and poetry offers a guide through emotional, political and societal chaos. As more people write and publish their poetry, either independently or through traditional book publishing, you want your collection to stand out with a beautiful and memorable book cover.

Social media has led a resurgence of poetry around the world. Top book selling sites list thousands of titles, with contemporary and classics both making best selling lists.

Poetry is as vast and varied as the multiple peoples and cultures creating it since the earliest spoken words. If prose likens to everyday speech, poetry echoes prayers, songs and magic.

According to Wikipedia, laughter “is a pleasant physical reaction and emotion consisting usually of rhythmical, often audible contractions of the diaphragm and other parts of the respiratory system,” while according to an anonymous poet:

A laugh is just like sunshine,

It freshens all the day.

It tips the peak of life with light

And drives the clouds away.

Whereas Wikipedia presents information sans emotion, appealing to the intellect, the words stripped of sentiment and bias, poetry moves our emotions through language, form, imagery and various formats, i.e., Japanese haiku is commonly structured as a three-line poem, with five-syllable first and third lines sandwiching a seven-syllable second line (for 17 total syllables). In contrast, The Mahābhārata, attributed to Krishna Dvaipayana (Vyasa), runs 200,000 single-line verses!

Modern poetry needs modern design

Like jazz, modern poetry can redefine form untethered to verse or rhyme or any limiting factor. Coverkitchen understands that thinking and designs are outside of traditional impositions. For Lines Spark Code, a collection of established and emerging Singapore poets, The Coverkitchen chefs created a specially designed a disposable jacket while underneath the book cover can be customized by filling in selected dots.

Typography that matches your style

Typography plays a critical role in book cover design. Typefaces and fonts communicate narrative, express mood and touch upon emotion. For Tongue Twisters for Terrible People, Bud Rose’s bawdy collection of very adult and alliterative verses, the Coverkitchen chefs created a crude hand-crafted type (to complement the lurid image) that expresses the vulgarity between the covers.
