The Epic of Didier Rain is a twisted historical fiction two-book series following the life of French dandy Didier Rain, whose weakness for saloon girls, money, and whiskey keeps derailing his plan to join the pantheon of epic poets.
Set in 1850, the first book, Delivering Virtue (2018), sees Didier embark on an epic odyssey of discovery across the American West after he’s approached by holy men claiming he’s part of a prophecy and agrees to transport an infant bride for a soul-selling sum of $30,000. But to fulfill his foretold role, he’ll have to succeed at the one task he’s always failed: keeping his pants buttoned. In the second book, Fortuna and the Scapegrace (2019), Didier finds himself destitute as he roams the rain-muddied streets of San Francisco when, miraculously, a seductive albino soothsayer launches Didier onto the next leg of his life’s stormy voyage. At turns ribald, horrifying, and hilarious, Fortuna and the Scapegrace follows Delivering Virtue in Didier Rain’s unfolding epic adventure of foibles, hope, and quest for love and redemption.
The design concept for this book series uses a collage of historical ephemera from the period, skillfully rearranged to create surreal imagery specifically suited to the stories of each title. The visual coherence across the books is maintained through the use of the same typography and stylistically similar 19th-century ornamental devices.
