Los Alucinados
Francisco Umbral
La Esfera de los Libros (2001)
Politics & Social Sciences

Translating to "the hallucinated", Los Alucinados is the personal tribute of Francisco Umbral to a suggestive gallery of fundamental Hispanic figures from the 19th and 20th centuries. More than forty writers and various movements are sharply reviewed and dissected to present a mosaic of profiles, memories, impressions and judgments that reconstructs the living portraits of its characters and constitutes an original history of literature, told through the brilliance and seductive style of its author.

In Spain, as in many other Western cultures, the visualization of pink elephants has been traditionally associated with intoxication or delusion. Our cover cooks' design approach makes humorous use of this cliché and depicts the proverbial pinkish pachyderm in precarious equilibrium among a storm of letters; serving as a visual metaphor of those authors who, more often than not, were perceived as freakish in their non-conformist stances.
