Interview with an author

David Jiménez spent nearly two decades covering wars, disasters and revolutions before being appointed director of El Mundo. What seemed like an exciting challenge turned into a battle to defend the independence of the newspaper against a political and economic establishment determined to control it. Jiménez offers a unique account of how life breathes in a newsroom, how the game of favors between the media and power works, and what price those who refuse to participate in it pay. Presidents, kings, ministers, bankers, money lords, commissioners and journalists star in this chronicle about the unspeakable secrets of journalism and the threads that govern Spain.

The author provided our cover cooks with old copies of the El Mundo newspaper as the base to cook up the design concept. Our cover cooks then selected pages on hot economic and political issues, shredded them, and tossed them together, before taking a photograph of the collage and baking the image onto a 3D mask. The resulting image serves as a portrait of the hidden face of the media.
