A China Doll in KL
Ewe Paik Leong
Monsoon Books (2014)
Thriller

A risqué crime thriller peeking into the wild and sometimes dangerous life of Chinese prostitutes in Kuala Lumpur. Meisu has just arrived in the city and is already the China doll whom all the men want to play with, but she soon finds herself caught unwittingly in the trap of Malaysia’s own Jack-the-ripper. As heady as a game of underground poker and as racy as a night of debauchery in the city, this work of pulp fiction packs pedal-to-the-floor action from start to finish. The book’s well-researched, ‘real’ accounts of the sex and sleaze so easily found in the food courts, clubs and motels of Kuala Lumpur expertly describe the places and people that seem all too real to us.

For the cover design, the editor requested our cover cooks to consider representational images that suited male target readers, Paik-Leong’s fans and existing readership of the bestselling Kuala Lumpur Undercover. With this in mind, the cover design uses a collage-style composition that imitates a scrapbook made of tabloid magazine clippings. Lending from pulp fiction, the cover is sensual without being obscene, taking into consideration the distribution of the book within Malaysia.
