El Caso Goldenberg
Nacho Toro
Ediciones B (2019)
Thriller

Shanghai, November 26, 1922, eleven o'clock at night. Bernardo Goldenberg, manager of Ramos Amusement Company, says goodbye to two men in the lobby of the Victoria cinema. The next day, the news of his brutal murder is the front page of all the newspapers. After years of research, both in China and Spain, Nacho Toro, professor at the Suzhou-based Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, reconstructs his murder with elements of a great thriller to reveal the fascinating but forgotten true story of the Spaniards who introduced and led the film industry in 1920s China.

The dramatic, cinematic sound of the title immediately suggested a cover design reminiscent of a vintage movie poster. The final design concept imitates the style of Chinese advertising from the 1920s, which coupled with an atmospheric photograph of old Shangai, sets the tone for a gripping true-crime story.
