Literary Politics & Social Sciences Coming of Age
In this coming-of-age story, a boy who has lost everything walks into the Californian mountains for the very last time. He meets an extraordinary girl with a unique guide to living. She agrees to help him, but first, he must overcome many challenges and find answers to some big questions about finding love and happiness.
For the cover design, our cover cooks hand drew an illustration that captures the book's themes of nature and personal growth, with the flow from left to right suggesting a journey. The flower blooming at the tip of the branch, known as a 'red paintbrush', is a wildflower that grows in the Tuolumne meadows, where the story is set, and which attracts hummingbirds. In Native American culture, hummingbirds are seen as healers and bringers of love, good luck and joy. The symbiosis between the flower and hummingbird represents the love growing between the boy and the girl. The author was so fond of the hummingbird concept that he decided to incorporate it in the story too.
