When the author was 27, her bladder went haywire and her life was suddenly controlled by an overactive organ she had barely given a thought to. But she's not alone: bladder problems are one of the most common reasons women seek medical attention. However, women's bladder issues are often downplayed. While men's urinary tract systems are thoroughly analyzed, women's are often overlooked, despite it being much more complex than men's. Læren om blæren treats the bladder and urinary tract from the perspective of women. In a light and humorous tone, the author explains how our bladder and urinary tracts are built and how they function through simple drawings; covering the most common disorders in what is a problem area for many women and describes different treatment options. The book also includes a chapter with fun facts and things you probably didn't know about the enigmatic organ.
While the author is German, Læren om blæren was published for the Norwegian market. The editor requested an original cover illustration that matched the light and humorous tone in the book. As such, the young woman on the cover, seen staring anxiously at an imaginary toilet bowl, is rendered in delicate lines and pastel shades to entice the Scandinavian audience.
